Nevada Railroad Commission valuation reports with engineering, land, and financial information about select Western railroads.
Scope and Content
The collection is from the Nevada Railroad Commission and these reports contain information on several Western railroads, with an emphasis on Nevada lines, as well as the Western Union Telegraph Company. The reports consist of three categories: engineering, land, and accounting.
•The Engineering Reports contain descriptions of the roadbed, track, bridges, yards, stations, and other facilities owned by the railroads, as well as description of the countryside through which the line passes. The documents also give mileage, locations of connections with other railroads and summaries of equipment. Locomotive road numbers are listed with wheel arrangement, builder and date, cylinder dimensions and weight. For cars, the road numbers are given along with information on the builders and the capacities of the cars.
•The land reports provide information on the amount and value of rural and urban properties owned by the railroads. They also contain more detailed listings of property and improvement values. The one accounting report provides a financial analysis of the company.
The documents are arranged alphabetically by corporate name and include Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Bullfrog Goldfield Railroad, California, Arizona and Santa Fe Railway, Central Pacific Railway, Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad, Nevada-California-Oregon Railway, Nevada Northern Railway, Nevada Transportation Company (Eureka-Nevada Railway), San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, Southern Pacific Company, Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad, Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad, Western Pacific Railway, and Western Union Telegraph Company.
