Description
Exterior view of Western Refrigerator Line refrigerator car 7001. This print is most likely a builder's photograph of car as it came out of the shops in January of 1923. The Western Pacific Railroad set up the Western Refrigerator Line effective January 1, 1923 to operate a new fleet of refrigerator cars; however, the WP reached an agreement with the Pacific Fruit Express, and the cars never operated in revenue service under the WRL name. The cars were changed to PFE lettering upon arrival in Roseville. Search for PFE refrigerator car 50187 to see the PFE and WP lettering scheme.

Description
This diminutive steam locomotive was built for the Central Pacific Railroad by Danforth, Cooke and Company of Paterson, New Jersey in 1863. Shipped from New York around Cape Horn, it arrived in San Francisco March 19, 1864. The C.P. Huntington (No. 3 of the Central Pacific Railroad) was used in the construction of the transcontinental railroad. In 1871 it was transferred to the newly organized Southern Pacific Railroad and renumbered No. 1. From 1894 on the C. P. Huntington became a symbol of Southern Pacific and was widely known from its many appearances in station openings and other railroad-related celebrations. Southern Pacific donated the engine to the State of California in 1964. It is now on display at the California State Railroad Museum.

Description
Thomas Hill's large oil painting (157-1/4 x 85-1/4 in.) of "The Driving of the Last Spike" is on display at the California State Railroad Museum. It is an imagined recreation of the ceremony held May 10, 1869 at Promontory Point, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the transcontinental railroad, when the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroad tracks were joined. Hill began the painting in 1877 at the request of Leland Stanford, who later refused to pay for the commission.

Description
Exterior end view of Fruit Growers Express refrigerator car 35832, on display at the California State Railroad Museum, Sacramento. Refrigerator cars made California fruits and vegetables available from coast to coast, transforming the state's economy. Thousands of iced refrigerator cars were built until the 1950s when mechanically cooled cars gradually replaced them. A typical steel-frame, wood-sheathed car of the 1920s and 1930s, No. 35832 (outshopped in 1924) carried perishable cargo throughout the country for nearly 40 years.
