Abstract
Financial records of the Central California Traction Company.
Scope and Content
Most of the documents included in this collection are financial records from the 1920s and early 1930s. •There are a series of inventory and supply sheets, most dated "as of December 31, 1927" (although data for previous years and into 1928 may also be included), in both worksheet and final report format, used to create a record of CCT's holdings at the time of the Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and Western Pacific takeover. •There are some legal and financial records related to attempts to take over Central California Traction Company, as well as records of property ownership and leases. •A valuation report as of June 1914 lists the Central California Traction Company's physical upgrades, such as culverts, trestles, rails, ties, ballasts, fences and gradings, as well as equipment and tools in the shops and substations. •The materials are organized alphabetically by subject.
History / Biographical
Chartered August 7, 1905; 55.68 miles between Stockton and Sacramento. The line was opened to Lodi on September 2, 1907, and to Sacramento on September 1, 1910. On January 1, 1928, it was acquired jointly by the Southern Pacific Company, Santa Fe and Western Pacific on condition that it sell its street car lines in Stockton to the Stockton Electric Railroad Company, a then wholly-owned Southern Pacific Company subsidiary which had been operating the street car lines for a number of years under lease. The first locomotive officially built at the Central Pacific shops in Sacramento, CP 2-55, later SP 1272 and 1516, was sold to CCT on May 4, 1910, and presumably disposed of when the line was electrified all the way through to Sacramento. Electrification ceased in 1946. [Guy Dunscomb, A CENTURY OF SOUTHERN PACIFIC STEAM LOCOMOTIVES, 1862-1962 (Modesto, California: 1967), p. 368]

Abstract
A munitions train, loaded with aerial bombs headed for Viet Nam exploded in the Southern Pacific Transportation Company’s Roseville, California yard on April 28, 1973. The collection includes photocopies of news clippings, the Federal Railroad Administration's Railroad Accident Investigation Report No. 4187 with supporting documentation, correspondence, memos, and site drawings about the 1973 incident. For the 1997 clean-up, there are team contact lists, correspondence, and company talking points for media contact.
Scope and Content
A munitions train, loaded with aerial bombs headed for Viet Nam exploded in the Southern Pacific Transportation Company’s Roseville, California yard on April 28, 1973. Between 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., a series of explosions rocked the nearby cities of Roseville, Citrus Heights and Antelope, injuring approximately 350 people and damaging 5,500 buildings, mostly residential. Eighteen thousand people were evacuated from the area. Southern Pacific lost 169 freight cars and suffered damage to another 98 cars, a locomotive, tracks, and equipment, and with casualty claims, total losses amounted to about $23 million. The cause of the explosions was never determined. Possibly one of the box cars caught fire when braking action generated sparks which may have ignited the wood floor. Another theory is that the bombs were not properly manufacturered or loaded at the Hawthorne Naval Ammunitions Depot (Nevada) where the shipment originated and were thus unstable. The clean-up of the Roseville yard led to the discovery of approximately 1,200 unexploded bombs which were removed and sent back to the Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot. The full transcript of the Federal Railroad Administration’s Railroad Accident Investigation Report No. 4187 can be found online at: http://dotlibrary.specialcollection.net/. In 1997 Union Pacific Railroad construction crews at the Roseville yard unearthed nine unexploded bombs. This discovery led to a search for remaining bombs. A task force composed of representatives of the Union Pacific Railroad, the California Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Toxic Substances Control, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Sacramento County oversaw the clean-up. Carl Bradley was the Union Pacific Railroad's representative for these efforts.
History / Biographical
Carl Bradley was a Superintendent for the Southern Pacific Company in Roseville. He retired in May of 2000 as Union Pacific's General Superintendent at Roseville.

Alamagordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway
Abstract
Financial information generated during the operation of the Alamagordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway.
Scope and Content
The Alamagordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway records consist of balance sheets, accounts receivable ledgers, vouchers, and voucher indexes. These contain information primarily on the railroad's finances, but with some references to operation. Researchers also are advised to consult records of the El Paso and Southwestern System (component lines, New Mexico Railway and Coal Company, and the Alamagordo Lumber Company).
History / Biographical
The Alamagordo and Sacramento Mountain Railway was incorporated on March 21, 1898 to run from Alamagordo Junction, New Mexico, on the line of the El Paso Northeastern Railway, east to the Sacramento Mountain timber stands. Eventually the line was completed 31-1/2 miles to Russia, New Mexico, where it connected with the tracks of the Alamagordo Lumber Company. The Alamagordo and Sacramento Mountain was constructed by the New Mexico Railway and Coal Company (later the El Paso and Northeastern Company). Phelps Dodge acquired the line in 1904 and made it a part of the El Paso and Southwestern System. In 1924 the Southern Pacific acquired the EP & SW and with it the Alamagordo and Sacramento Mountain. The Southern Pacific continued to operate the Alamagordo and Sacramento Mountain until 1947 when it abandoned the line.

Abstract
This appears to be a railroad-produced souvenir photo album of the scenery and sights along the California Western Railroad & Navigation, an independent short line that ran (and still runs) betweeen Willits and Ft. Bragg.
Scope and Content
This appears to be a railroad-produced souvenir photo album of the scenery and sights along the California Western Railroad & Navigation, an independent short line that ran (and still runs) betweeen Willits and Ft. Bragg. The road's trademark name was "The Califonia Scenic Line". This album contains fifty-six 8 x 10" sepia toned photographs. These are not traditional photographs but some sort of photo process, probably rotogravure, which produces a dense image that is not as clean as offset. Each image is printed on a heavy card stock that is bound into the album at the left edge. Since this was a souvenir album sold to the public, there are a variety of scenes, including trains, tent accommodations at the Noyo River Tavern, fly fishing, logging, and downtown Ft. Bragg.
